"If you’re planting a tree and the end of the world comes, finish planting the tree."
- Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings upon him
“If you are planting a tree and you hear that the Messiah has come, first finish planting the tree, then go to greet him.”

A Song at the End of the World
by Czeslaw Milosz
On the day the world ends
A bee circles a clover,
A fisherman mends a glimmering net.
Happy porpoises jump in the sea,
By the rainspout young sparrows are playing
And the snake is gold-skinned as it should always be.
On the day the world ends
Women walk through the fields under their umbrellas,
A drunkard grows sleepy at the edge of a lawn,
Vegetable peddlers shout in the street
And a yellow-sailed boat comes nearer the island,
The voice of a violin lasts in the air
And leads into a starry night.
And those who expected lightning and thunder
Are disappointed.
And those who expected signs and archangels' trumps
Do not believe it is happening now.
As long as the sun and the moon are above,
As long as the bumblebee visits a rose,
As long as rosy infants are born
No one believes it is happening now.
Only a white-haired old man, who would be a prophet
Yet is not a prophet, for he's much too busy,
Repeats while he binds his tomatoes:
No other end of the world will there be,
No other end of the world will there be.

On the day the world ends
Basil snuggles up to Baraka,
Wraps his arms around her tight,
Whispers softly that he loves her,
As they drift off to sleep; good night.
=) This one made me smile this morning.
Mmmmm, pretty poetry in the post, and Basil just made it even sweeter. =)
I love poetry. It is why I read poems and sometimes I write too. You have chosen the very best poems ever published.
I enjoy visiting your blog.
Keep on publishing.
nice...
B: can I count on you to contribute something towards the ProgFaithBlogCarn this weekend? (If you are busy travelling and whatnot, I'll snag this post).
Beautiful!

Salaam all,
Basil: Thank you, sweetness.
That made me think of that scene in Titanic (of all things) where the older couple are lying down on the bed facing each other as the water floods in to drown them...having lived life together, to die when the time comes, facing each other, together to the end, with calm & courage.
It seemed a nice way to go.
May we die in our beds at a healthy old age with decades of happiness behind us and our children around us...but in any case insha-Allah to be with you to the last breath, ameen.
Yasmine: It's a good one isn't it? I really liked today's too:
The Basic Con
by Lew Welch
Those who can’t find anything to live for,
always invent something to die for.
Then they want the rest of us to
die for it, too.
Ufukhati: Welcome! And thanks for the encouragement. :)
Warmly,
Baraka
I do love this Milosz poem!
And the two quotations you used at the beginning of the post make it all the more wonderful. :-)
