Poetry Monday: Wendell Berry

Lisa Schamess of The Truth Hurts has a lovely tradition of Poetry Thursday, which I read avidly, so I thought I would celebrate it here, but on Mondays - because who doesn't need a beautiful boost into the long week?

The Wild Rose

Sometimes hidden from me
in daily custom and in trust,
so that I live by you unaware
as by the beating of my heart.

Suddenly you flare in my sight,
a wild rose blooming at the edge
of thicket, grace and light
where yesterday was only shade,

and once again I am blessed, choosing
again what I chose before.

-by Wendell Berry, for his wife

That is one of my favorite poems. Thanks for reminding me of it. Hope that men are capable of such emotion. Necessary.

hooray ;) i am a big fan of poetry-blogging.

and berry's poems to his wife are all so rich and good: I also really like 'the country of marriage' and another that's just called 'marriage,' which does not seem to exist in full on the internets, alas.

yay, Wendell Berry is one of my favorite poets! His poetry collection, A Timbered Choir, is gorgeous. I especially love the poem "To my granddaughters who visited the Holocaust Museum..." (the lines:

"...But remember
when a man of war becomes a man of peace,
he gives a light, divine

though it is also human.
When a man of peace is killed
by a man of war, he gives a light.

You do not have to walk in darkness.
If you will have the courage for love,
you may walk in light. It will be

the light of those who have suffered
for peace. It will be
your light.")

April is National Poetry Month, so I signed up to receive a poem a day from http://poets.org/. It's rocking.
